Franklin Hospital CSSD team a vital cog O ne of the most important and unsung teams within a hospital is the Central Sterile Services Department team (CSSD). Here at Franklin, we value our team and the important job they do. The team ensure that every surgical instrument is cleaned to the highest standard. Standards related to the sterilisation of reusable instruments are managed under the latest Australia and New Zealand 4187 standards. On site we store approximately 120 crates holding multiple instruments and many more single- wrapped instruments which have to be hand-washed, then machine- washed, packed and sterilised before the next surgery, or put into a sterile storeroom. Not all instruments can be sterilised at high temperatures and so we also have a low-temperature steriliser for those specific instruments that require low- temperature sterilisation On top of this, medical companies supply us with additional instruments for specific surgeries which also have to go through the cleaning process prior to their use. All this means hours of dedicated work ensuring that the instruments are spotless before they are used on any patient. Part of the responsibility of the CSSD team is to check all prosthesis Franklin Hospital Te Haumanu Kohekohe that come into the hospital sterile. This is for surgeries like hip and knee replacements, these are sent to us for specific surgeries and need to be checked in and out. Our teams have worked in CSSD in other facilities and come from varying backgrounds, and have many years of experience. Amongst our team we have four qualified sterilising technicians who have undertaken specific education relating to the processing and sterilisation of JOHN STREET Franklin Hospital GLASGOW ROAD reusable instruments and two CSSD assistants who are not yet qualified but are working to achieve this standard. @ At Franklin Hospital we pride ourselves that the team and facilities comply with AS/NZ:4187 standards and we can ensure sterility of all reusable instrumentation is guaranteed. This means that our washing and sterilising machinery has to be tested daily and we follow rigid standard operating procedures. To help achieve this, many sets are packed in metal crates rather than wrapped in purpose-made paper that has to be sent to landfill.
